Out West Trip 2010. Destination: Kansas!
Early August we got a call from Granmom and Grandpops Lahoda and they said that they wanted to come out and spend a weekend watching the babies for us so we could go away for our anniversary. Labor Day weekend would give us 3 days to get away and relax without taking extra time off. After a quick discussion we decided to take them up on their offer and that we’d go down to Athens for the weekend to revisit some of our favorite places from the beginning of our relationship. We also decided it would be fun to tackle Rob’s goal of riding the Athens/Nelsonville bike path end to end.

October 17th, 2010 we took the twins pumpkin picking for the first time. Susan and Abbie Carver were visiting and came with us to help out. It was a beautiful, sunny October day and we drove out to Lynd fruit farm East of Westerville. This was not long after RJ got his glasses and his eyes were dilated (we found out afterwards that they would remain dilated for a couple weeks!) so when we arrived and unloaded the kids from the van, he immediately showed his discomfort. The field we were walking around didn’t have any trees or anything so it was hard to keep him comfortable. We brought the twins over to some pumpkins, but there weren’t too many around since the area had been pretty combed over by other people. We didn’t want to go to another area because we were worried about how well he’d do. We took some pictures and grabbed a few pumpkins before heading home. We’re looking forward to next year when they will hopefully enjoy the trip more!

A little after their 1st birthday we hired our friend Sam Fahmi to do a photo shoot with the twins. We went to Inniswood Metro Garden and brought some of our cutest outfits for them. The trip was a blur of corralling babies, trying to get them to pose and trying to keep them happy. We got some great pictures of them and are super happy with the results!

After a fun trip out to Kansas, and the determination that we could, in fact, drive long distances with the babies in the van, we prepared for the trip out to visit the Lahodas in NJ. So on Wednesday, July 21, we set out to Pittsburgh to visit Rob’s family who live there. We got to see Annie’s son Eamonn who is about 7 months older than the twins. We also got to see Henry who is only about a month older than the twins. Last year when we went, Henry was only a few days old so it was pretty amazing to see how much bigger he was! We spent a fun evening with everyone and got some really cute pictures of all the babies together. It’s really cool to see how each of them is different but how many similarities there were. RJ and Eamonn especially looked a lot alike!

On Wednesday, August 18th, 2010, the babies turned one year old! We decided to have their birthday party on August 14th, the Saturday before. Grandma Teresa came out on the 12th to stay with us until the 17th. Uncle Jon had to get back to work, so he, Grandmom and Grandpops came on the 13th to stay with us until the 16th.
We copied from the decorative idea that Grandmom had done for Kristy’s twin baby shower. She had us pin up some of Rob’s old baby clothes, baby and tiny tot pictures of Kristy and Rob, and she bought some girl clothes too, since she hadn’t thought about getting Kristy’s old baby clothes from Grandma Teresa. So, we went back through and found some of our favorite baby clothes from Evie and R.J.‘s first year: preemie, newborn, and bigger. Our idea was to have them laying on a table with each baby book turned to the ‘my first birthday’ page.

The past couple days our church has been hosting a mini conference about the Holy Spirit. For a long time we haven’t been able to do much because of taking care of the babies. When there’s an event that doesn’t have childcare we have to figure out how to keep the babies fed and happy. It’s been difficult trying to keep them happy and quiet so we generally have avoided taking them out like that. Now that they’re getting bigger, we have tried to be a bit more open to doing things.

Evie started crawling today (Monday, June 28th) at 10 1/2 months old or 8 months adjusted! She has been shifting back and forth on all fours for at least the last two months and so we’d been saying for awhile that she is going to crawl soon. Well, it FINALLY happened! We were beginning to think that she would walk before she crawls. The last few days she’s been lunging for things and then take a few crawling steps, but that was it and then she would move backward again. She has been “crawling” backward for awhile now.

We took the twins to Kansas on their first road trip ever in May. We left Saturday the 15th of May and returned home Saturday the 22nd. They did really well traveling which was a huge blessing.
